4 SHOWSTOPPING SPRING TRENDS AND HOW TO WEAR THEM
Nordstrom decodes the season’s biggest styles to help you do the runway your way
Trend #1: The Mid-Century Maven
Cool your jets, architecture buffs. While dubbing this trend
“mid-century maven” might call to mind Eames chairs, Neutra
homes and the palm trees of Southern California, what it really
means is that all the Mad Men-inspired dresses you’re coveting
are totally back in style.
“Anna Karenina in space.” “Sleek festival-grunge chic.” “Rock-and-roll baroque minimalism.” Sure, it’s easy for fashion insiders to toss trends around with
reckless abandon, but what good is that if you have no idea how to incorporate them into your wardrobe?
We’ve decoded this spring’s biggest trends so gutsy fashion followers and classic-loving ladies alike can look completely of-the-moment all season long.
Prepare to kiss any fears of mixing prints and rocking denim shorts goodbye.
Trend #2: Fit to Print
Toss everything you know about prints out the window – it’s time
to break some rules this season. Head-to-toe graphics? Mixing
patterns? Clashing prints? All fair game. Don’t worry though –
we’ll explain.
Trend #3: Spell It Out in Black and White
We know, we know. The last few seasons have been all about a splash
of color and adding jewel tones to your wardrobe and all that jazz. The
easiest way to make a graphic look pop, though, is to keep your colors
as neutral as possible. That’s why it makes sense this season to invest
in black and white pieces.
Trend #4: Suit Up in Shorts
Here’s the secret key to staying stylish in shorts this season: your
shoe choices. By sticking to pumps, boots, and oxfords rather than
deferring to your tried-and-true flip-flops, you’ll keep your shorts from
becoming more casual than cool. That’s right – the easiest way to up
the ante in a shorts suit is by focusing on your feet. Read on and we’ll
make you a believer.
For beginners: Styling a little
fit-and-flare dress is half the fun of
wearing it. Go all out and commit to
the look with a pair of retro
sunglasses and a pair of pointy
pumps.
Eliza J Stripe Crepe Fit & Flare
Dress, $168; A.J. Morgan Retro
Sunglasses, $24; kate spade new
york ‘licorice too’ pump, $298
For experts: Make this retro look
a little sassier by switching up
your proportions and materials.
Shorten that stereotypical full
skirt and toughen it up a tad with
a skater-style faux-leather mini,
and add a canary cardigan. Throw
in a buttoned-up button-down and
a pair of pristine oxfords for an
irreverent take on classic
American style.
ASTR Faux Leather Skater Skirt,
$64; Caslon V-Neck Cardigan,
$59; BP. ‘Sandi’ Oxford, $69.95
For beginners: Pick a simple
silhouette – say, shorts and a
camp shirt – and splash it with
an in-your-face print for a look
that’s so of-the-moment that
you’ll even impress yourself.
Easy.
Tory Burch ‘Page’ Print Shorts,
$175; ‘Brigitte’ Print Military
Shirt, $195
For experts: If you’re going to go, be
sure to go big. Voluminous ankle
pants in a bright red hue might take
center-stage in some outfits, but not
this one. Mix your prints with a
geometric sweater and shoulder
cut-outs, and then blow everyone’s
minds with monochromatic shoes
and accessories.
Viva Vena! High Waisted Pleat
Ankle Pants, $68; Cutout Geometric
Jacquard Sweater, $78; DV by
Dolce Vita ‘Jentry’ Boot - $128.95;
Melie Bianco Janelle Clutch, $58
For beginners: Remember
those highlighter-hued jeans
you finally bought last year
and subsequently wore to
death? Do that with some
striped skinnies this season
and indulge your inner rock
star a bit. Add a silk top and
a chevron scarf to tie the
whole look together without
going too crazy.
Hudson Jeans ‘Krista’ Stripe
Super Skinny Jeans, $154;
Theory ‘Sorcha’ Silk Top,
$170; Lauren Ralph Lauren
Silk Infinity Scarf, $45
For experts: Keeping your colors
subdued just means you can go
a little crazy with your styling,
so don’t hold back. We like a
look that really pushes the
envelope – a sleeveless blazer
over a sheer lace tank and
super-skinny Bermuda shorts
sound like just the ticket to us.
Add a pair of Lucite-heeled
booties and a crop-top bralette
and you’re in business, baby.
Mural Floral Print Tux Vest, $78;
Tildon Open Back Lace Top,
$48; Mural Flower Print Shorts,
$48; Tildon ‘Flawless’ Bootie,
$89.95; Leith Lace Bralette, $34
For beginners: Repeat after us: denim shorts, denim shorts, denim
shorts. Specifically, styled with lots of layers and Oxfords. Try a pair of
boyfriend shorts in a dark denim and top them with a button-down,
v-neck cardigan, and schoolboy blazer for a look that
seems super-complicated but is actually a cinch to pull off. Finish
things up with a pair of (what else?) classic
neutral Oxfords.
For experts: Nothing’s fancier than a silk suit, right? Turn the tables
entirely on staid and stuffy office looks by making yours a bit shorter –
we particularly like rag & bone’s take on classic office attire in bright
blue. Pair some drawstring shorts with a slouchy blazer and a laid-back
tank for an easy-going ensemble that’s still office-appropriate, and add a
pair of perforated booties to show you put a little thought into the look.
rag & bone/JEAN
‘Ivette’ Drawstring
Shorts, $255;
‘Jefferson’ Leather
Panel Blazer, $535;
‘Marilyn’ Tank,
$220; rag & bone
‘Newbury’ Boot,
$550
Kut from the Kloth
Boyfriend Shorts,
$54.50; Caslon Long
Sleeve Shirt, $58;
Caslon V-Neck
Cardigan, $59;
Caslon Dot Print
Jacket, $78; Cole
Haan ‘LunarGrand’
Wingtip Oxford, $198
