Six designers have been chosen for the fourth year of the Chicago Fashion
Incubator (CFI). The 2011 Designers In Residence (DIR) will be given the
opportunity to learn the economics, marketing and merchandising of fashion
from industry experts as well as mentors from Macy’s and the broader fashion
community.
For a second year, CFI partnered with the 900 North Michigan Shops on a
pop-up store to celebrate the success of the alumni designers and to
introduce the next DIR through a dedicated retail store and series of exclusive
events and trunk shows. The 2,800 square foot retail shop, along with 3,000
square foot event space will reside on Level 5 of the 900 North Michigan
Shops and will highlight CFI designers from the last four years starting on
Thursday, March 17 through Saturday, April 23, 2011. The Pop-Up Shop will
be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each Thursday through Saturday and 12 p.m.
to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
The new class of designers was formally announced at LAUNCH/CFI, a
reception and fundraiser, on March 15. Also debuting at LAUNCH/CFI, was
the limited edition soy, organic, cotton blend “Made In Chicago” t-shirt with
a graphic design by Associate Designer Brandon Breaux of Ends Wealth
Corp. Available for purchase during the five week-long pop up shop, only 170
t-shirts will be issued with all proceeds from the $35 garment benefiting CFI.
“The shared resources, mentors, and workshops allow the Chicago Fashion
Incubator designers to be on a fast track to better understanding their brands,
their customers, and their product--all essential to the growth of their
businesses,” said Lara Miller, Executive Director. “The Pop Up at the 900
North Michigan Shops brings the CFI program to the public allowing us to
celebrate the accomplishments of the alumni, while introducing the next
generation of emerging talent in Chicago. The store gives the designers the
unique opportunity to sell and promote their brands at one of the premiere
shopping centers in Chicago.”
Designers from the 2010 class as well as alumni from 2008 and 2009 are
enjoying success through their experience at CFI. Some of them have had
their lines picked up by nationwide boutiques; enjoyed top tier media
coverage; had their designs worn by celebrities; competed in high-profile
opportunities; and participated in exclusive trunk shows.
