The Heshima Kenya 2011 Fashion Challenge |
The Heshima Kenya 2011 Fashion Challenge was hosted by The Maisha Collective. Ten of Chicago's up-and-coming designers participated in the Fashion Challenge, event inspired by Project Runway. The designers were: Jade Nguy, Crystal Simms, Concetta Cipriano, Kahindo Mateene, Shalini Sharma, Martha Brummett, Miriam Cecilia Carlson, Anastasia Chatzka, Amy Marie Fenderson, and Malika Lor. The event was emceed by Lara Miller and Marcus Riley, and judged by Billy Dec, Bianca Alexander, Matt Lorenz, and Christina Hanson. The winner of the Fashion Challenge was Jade Nguy and the People's Choice want to Miriam Cecilia Carlson. The Heshima Kenya 2011 Fashion Challenge supports the development of the Maisha Collective, a program of Nairobi, Kenya-based Heshima Kenya that trains and empowers young refugee women from Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, and the Congo to design, produce, and market a unique line of hand-dyed scarves. Founding members of the Collective will be honored for their strength and hope, and for sharing their skills with so many.
